Mailing Lists for discussion of sex, relationships and other issues pertaining to disability.

Yahoo Lists

BDSM_4_PWD
The acronym expands to “BDSM for people with disabilities.” From the Group Description: ‘This group is designed to give people who have a disability and their partners a forum to discuss issues of BDSM as it relates to issues that arise from one or the other having physical limitations. These limitations can be physical, mental\emotional or any combination thereof. ‘ The group seems rather active and has a large subscriber base.

DisabledSex
This list is one of the first of its kind, although some time after its creation it merged with a second similar group, so there are a fair number of subscribers. There is a fairly good mix of people with varying disabilities, and the list is fairly quiet. If you are not up for a lot of list traffic then this might be the list for you. The list is moderated, meaning that to obtain a subscription you will need to be approved. Sending an e-mail to the moderator address will help!

SexyDisGal
This list is slightly more busy than DisabledSex, and is also moderated. The list is very supportive and in general a great resource. The moderators require that you send an e-mail detailing info about yourself before you will be subscribed to the list. The most important info in this short e-mail is your reason for wanting to join. Look at the web page for further information. This list was originally intended for the discussion of issues pertaining to relationships with disabled women but the purpose has grown over time and no one need feel uncomfortable in requesting subscription. The moderators just want to know a little bit about you, which they typically use to introduce you to the group!

DisabledAbleLovers
This mailing list was originally created to discuss issues which may arise within a relationship between a couple in which only one partner is disabled. It, too, has broadened its focus somewhat as it is unlikely to reject subscribers. You may be single, or in a relationship with two disabled partners, or you may have dated a disabled person in the past. Anyone is welcome, although at times because of the nature of the group description newcomers have asked whether or not they should stay. List traffic is frequent but not overwhelming. Time is rarely wasted in this group, but moderation is strict.
Note: Advertisements and devotees are not welcome–and the moderators will act swiftly against those who act inapropriately. Tread lightly here.
Currently the link tells you that you are not a member, but unlike other Yahoo! groups it does not tell you how to join

Gimp Girl Lists
(from www.gimpgirl.com)

Queer Ladies
A list for lesbian, bisexual and transgendered women of all ages with disabilities.

Gimp Girlies
This list is for disabled women from ages 15-25.

Queer Girlies
Disabled women from ages 15-25 who identify as “queer” (lesbian, bisexual or transgendered) are welcome here. Note: I’m not entirely sure I agree with the odd little distinction here between “Girlies” and “Ladies,” but it doesn’t necessarily seem pejorative. GimpGirl.com is a fairly good site with cohesive information.

Queer Lists

Queernet.org has a really extensive list of mailing lists which they host. Not all have to do with disability, but a fair number do. For a complete list of their mailing lists, try this link.

Queer Girlies
Disabled women from ages 15-25 who identify as “queer” (lesbian, bisexual or transgendered) are welcome here.

The Living List
For Bisexual and Lesbian women with disabilities and the people who love them. May or may not be affiliated with a similarly-named Queernet.org list. To subscribe:
E-mail [email protected]
In the message body, type: subscribe living Your E-mail Address

Queer Ladies
A list for lesbian, bisexual and transgendered women of all ages with disabilities.

Magazines and Columns (relationship or sex advice and other disability issues, in print or online)

Good Vibrations Magazine: Sexuality and Disability Column
This column is a new feature of Good Vibrations (online) Magazine, put out by Good Vibrations, the sex toy, book and video shop. So far, the most common contributor to the column is an able-bodied woman involved with a man with Muscular Distrophy, but there is at least one other writer contributing to the column. This magazine is good all-around, so check it out!

Nerve
Here is Nerve magazine’s Special Issue: Sex and Disability. Also contains links to past relavent articles.

Reach Out Magazine
Here is the online version of Reach Out magazine. Members who subscribe to the magazine also have access to personals, message boards, and members-only mailing lists. The site is geared toward helping disabled people come together and meet one another.

Bella Online: Disabilities
This site is essentially in the format of an online magazine but calls its topics “channels.” The disabilities columnist has covered a lot of topics, including parenting and sexuality. It’s geared toward women, which might be why I’d categorize it as an online magazine–reminds me a bit of some GLAMOUR type thing–but its disabilities section is really quite thorough and useful.

FLASH
The Deaf Queer E-zine from DQRC.

Bent
The self-proclaimed “CripGay” magazine. Very good articles on sexuality for anyone, regardless of orientation.

Dykes, Disabilities and Stuff
A quarterly newsletter online devoted to the concerns of disabled lesbians.

Delilah’s Advice on Sexuality and Disability
This is a subsection of the “Delilah” sex advice column. Her answers are short but potentially useful. What is most interesting about this site is that they offer a bimonthly online chat with a disabled sexologist, Linda Mona, on the first and third Tuesday of every month from 10 to 11 Eastern time. Delilah herself is not disabled.

Accent on Living Magazine
This all-purpose disability magazine addresses issues of sexuality fairly regularly. Subscription is inexpensive, and various deals are on their website on books which are produced by their affiliated publishing company, Cheever Publishing (which you will find mention of numerous times in the reading list. They’ve made available a very wide range of books on sexuality and disability.

New Mobility Magazine
This is an all-around disability magazine but it has articles on sexuality and sexual issues fairly regularly. It’s a good way to keep up with just about everything.

Enabled Online
An all-around disability magazine in online form with articles on sexuality and disability and a few useful links.

Paralinks Online Magazine
This magazine, geared toward the those with spinal cord injuries, has a number of good articles and resources regarding sexuality.

Disability Central — Teen E-zine
This e-zine is for teens with disabilities. It is funded by a grant and the staff are all teenagers with disabilities who are paid hourly for their work. I think it’s a great project, and although it doesn’t address sexuality directly, there is a Relationships column.

Clubs/Boards for disabled sexuality and relationship discussion, web-based or in person

People With Disabilities Forum: Sexuality
Check out this forum, hosted by and for people with disabilitites, where I moderate open discussion on sexuality.

Spinal Cord Injury Forums at “Care Cure.” There is a sexuality forum here which is relatively active.

Adults Central for Spina Bifida
Another web club, this one centers on adults with spina bifida but people with other disabilities are equally welcome.

Disabled Singles
Another Yahoo club with a very large subscriber base, this group is also affiliated with Singles With Disabilities in that they share the same personals site.

Disabled Female Sexuality
A place for women to discuss issues of sexuality which pertain to them.

Disabled Sex Questions
This group seems fairly active with a decent subscriber base and is geared toward answering questions of sexuality specific to those of us with disabilities.

I tried to pick the best Yahoo Clubs that I could find, by going through messages in each of the groups posted here. I have also refrained from posting groups which are not very active. If these do not seem to be enough, you can go to the Community: Disabled/Relationships Category yourself to inspect the other groups.

Other clubs and boards

The Outsiders Club
A club for disabled people based in England. The club has a quarterly newsletter and a members-only resource library, including titles pretaining to sexuality. Price for membership varies based on employment status. Presumably, you don’t actually have to be in England to be a member, but most social events seem to be centered in London.

Dating Services spefically geared toward disabled people.

DateAble
This site is subdivided into DateAble and DateAble International, meaning that it serves people around the world. A very professional-looking site.

DateAbilities
Another decent site–slightly less professional, but also newly created. They apparently also have a mailing list and other resources available. The American flag at the top of the flag leads us to believe that this site is a US-specific one. Update: the original web-site is gone, but the list is still available through a Yahoo! group

WebGuild Dating
A site with self-proclaimed “just-for-fun dating service.” The political links are interesting and worth noting–keeping up to date is good–but they seem US-specific.

Disabled Personal Ads
This dating service is well-designed with interesting links and columns. It is located in Australia but seems to be internationally-minded. Its focus seems to be on amputees but it deals with able-bodied and disabled people looking for others.

Disabled Singles Dating Service
This web page is affiliated with the Yahoo Clubs Singles With Disabilities and Disabled Singles (see above.) It is an international dating service and looks fairly promising.

Queer Links

Our list of queer mailing lists

Blind Friends of Lesbians and Gays
The name speaks for itself pretty well. A good site.

Gender, Sexuality and Body Politics A good site which discusses gender, bisexuality, polyamory, etc.

The Deaf Queer Resource Center
A very professional site from a resourceful-looking organization.

FLASH
The Deaf Queer E-zine from DQRC.

Bent
The self-proclaimed “CripGay” magazine. Very good articles on sexuality for anyone, regardless of orientation.

The Rainbow Bridge
“Linking Deaf and Hearing Queers.” A bit gaudy, but a very complete site, with queer and deaf news and links (separate), and pages dealing with bisexuality and transgendered issues as well as safe sex and AIDS information.

Dykes, Disabilities and Stuff
A quarterly newsletter online devoted to the concerns of disabled lesbians.

Gayscape Online Resource List: Disabilities
Here is Gayscape’s disability-related section of their directory.
Passing Twice
A web site for queer stutterers and their allies.

General Disability and Sexuality Links

LeathermasterLeathers creates and sells adaptive/accessible leather gear for people with disabilities! Very cool.

Dwarfism and parenting
LPA’s article on dwarfism and parenting.

Through the Looking Glass
Through the Looking Glass (TLG) is a nationally recognized non-profit agency and first National Resource Center for Parents with Disabilities. They provide direct services, training, materials and research concerning families in which a child, parent or grandparent has a disability or medical issue.

Disability.gr
Though located in Greece, there are English versions of each page (and I have linked to the English section.) and it is overall a good resource for those with an SCI or MS. The Disability Archives are a wonderful area of the site, with articles on many issues, while the Sexuality page is well-done and informative. Update: this site is currently under reconstruction and all the text is in Greek

Source Health’s page on Fertility, Sexuality, Love and Romance
This page is fairly good for the articles that are there right now, but it is not very often updated. Still, the articles are all good and if you keep checking back you can read the bulletin boards and see if they update these articles. Among them is “Installment 1: The Disability Kama Sutra.” Source Health also sells various diabetes and disability-related products.

Cando.com (Can Do) Forums
There is both a forum specifically for sexuality questions as well as one for Spouses and Partners (with disabilities) here. Fairly active (much better than the Source Health boards in that respect). An impressive number of articles on sexuality can also be found there. Can Do also sells disability products and has a list of resources pretaining to disabilities. They seem to specialize in adaptive equipment and rehabilitation materials.

Breast Health Access for Women with Disabilities
I can’t stress enough how important examination of the breasts is for women in prevention and early detection of breast cancer and other problems. This organization is making strides in helping disabled women learn to do the self-exams.

Ebility
This site has a lot of resources and is a general disabilities site, but also has a Sexuality “channel” and forum. Dr. Linda Mona, a disabled woman with a PHD in psychology, has her column here.

Sexuality and Spinal Cord Injury
Here is Paralinks’ bimonthly column on SCI and sexuality, with letters and comments from readers and a few other goodies.

National Study of Women With Disabilities
This essay outlines a lot of issues which pertain to sexuality and disability, and although women were the subjects, it is very useful information for men or women with disabilities to read.

Mark’s Ratpage
A site with a lot of helter-skelter information. Most notably, it’s got pornography and erotic fiction featuring disabled people. Not a whole lot, but ya gotta admit you’re probably surprised to find any (as sad as that is).

BDSM and Disability and Sexuality
This section of BDSM Online is written by a down-to-earth hearing-impaired woman who addresses many issues pertaining to disability and sexuality with a focus on her experiences in BDSM situations. It’s a very good article.

The Sexual Health Network
This site is a general sex information site, but they have a fairly good section on disability and sexuality. Something I just noticed today is that they have a Question and Answer section with a list of MD and PHD-holders with various specialties. At least one specializes in Sexuality and Disability. Archives of past answers are also available.

Sex and Human Life
This site is essentially an essay in the form of detailed answers to some frequently asked questions. It is fairly good, although I would disagree with a few things–particularly the man’s stance on homosexuality as a “moral issue” that need not be addressed, but the majority of his content is accurate and well said, so I don’t think politics should get in the way of the good parts of what he has to say.

Disability Resources Online
This site is an all-inclusive disabilities website. It covers sexuality among a host of tons of other topics. Its links regarding women with disabilities are particularly helpful and numerous enough that I was surprised by all that I found. Their section on parenting is also quite useful, as is the regional directory of disability organizations.

Quadriplegia.org’s SCI and Sexuality Resources
Here you can ORDER journal articles on the topic of spinal cord injury and sexuality among other topics. Since I haven’t used this service, I’m not sure of the prices involved.

Scarleteen
This site is a very good resource, geared toward teens, and not a disability-specific site, but overall a great place to go. Hanne and Heather, the co-founders, are really great people and the articles cover basically everything, as do the boards. Hey, I still read them, and I am nearly 20.

Sexuality and Disability at About.com.
There are tons of interesting links here. I really like it. It covers positions, dating, and tons of other stuff.

Disabilities Online. This is a great database of disability-related links. It covers basically everything.

Disability/Sexuality Humor

BlindKISS
Great British humor relating to visual impairment/blindness, and web radio to boot!

SexOnWheels.COM
Check out the amusing and insightful sex positive merchandise sold at this site! It’s great.

The Gimp Store
This online store sells tons of different shirts with disability-related humorous sayings, both dealing with sexuality and not, on them. My personal favorite (and one I nearly bought): FAILED SKYDIVER. You need a sense of humor, and at times a dark one, to enjoy this site, but it’s well worth it.
